How to enable burning with the Mitsumi CR-48XATE burner with iTunes/OS X

The Mitsumi CR-48XATE mechanism finds itself into numerous CD burners which appear to be compatible with OS X, such as the Que! Fire 32x10x40x FireWire CD-RW drive. Alas, iTunes doesn't seem to find it, at least on my system.

The solution is to whip out a hex editor, such as HexEdit and edit a couple things around.

The file you want to edit, most likely, is:

Hard Drive:System:Library:PrivateFrameworks:DiscRecording.framework:
 Versions:A:Resources:DevicePlugIns:MitsumiCDR.device-plugin

Make sure you keep a BACKUP OF THIS FILE, because you might BREAK IT HORRIBLY and REALLY BAD STUFF WILL HAPPEN which I cannot be held responsible for, because obviously my system has some sort of curse on it that yours doesn't have, and if you pound a stake through the heart of someone that's *not* a Vampire, weird stuff happens, OK?

Now that that's over with...

Somewhere around 000019E0 you'll find CR-48X9TE. Change the 9 to an A (make sure you don't change it to CR-48X9ATE, or CR-48XA9TE, because then really bad stuff will happen), and save the file. You might have to Save As... elsewhere and then copy it in as root, but how to do that is an exercise for the reader.

You might have to restart iTunes or even reboot after this. I don't know. Do whatever makes it work. :-) If it doesn't work, sorry, but there's something else wrong.

Hope this helps!
